Route 1, Heterocera

Route 1 is a long horse-shoe shaped road around the Heterocera Continent in Second Life.  Route 1 is part of a multi-road system that also includes railways. For the most part Route 1 is a pleasant road that is easy to navigate. I only found two places with significant lag.

Heterocera (best fairuse map I could find)

If you decide to drive Route 1,  you can get a good map from the Explorer's Information Centre in Menophra.

I am only listing a few major landmarks along the way, you will have to travel the route yourself to see all the ingenious ways that residents have landscaped their roadside parcels.

Some of my sources had a difference of opinion as to whether a particular stretch of road was Route 1, the Atoll Road, or just 'Protected Land'. I am going with what the World Map identifies as Route 1 when I click on it inworld.

START:

Starting at Agirus, head north towards Pini. Mainly private builds along the route here, but there is a public picnic area in Lyonet.

In Leafminer you will find Mole Mart, a great resource for free LDPW textures, items, and links to other LDPW freebie sites.

Mole Mart: Road signs and road textures

Further along you will see an apple cart on your right, and a Butterfly House made by Garden Mole.

In Peach you can visit the Peach Pit Diner.

You will go through many more regions,  but you will eventually pass by the Unknown Theme Park, one of the oldest amusement parks in Second Life.

At the crossroads in Rivula you need to go right, towards Lunula, Parva, and Mormo.

There are picnic spots in Parva and Mormo. There are spots along the road where steam is coming up by the side.

Perhaps the reason for the steam is the Moleford Municipal Water Company in Spini? The water has a strange greenish glow, and the water creatures look odd.

I wouldn't eat fish caught here...

A few parcels further, if you look up, it appears a train has partially derailed.

In Sociaria, on the left side, is a large public viewing platform.

In Menophra, on the right, is the Menophra Town Square. The area around it is the Friendship Forest Rest Area, operated by the Protected Route Interest Group. You can visit the Observation Tower, or pick up good road maps at the Explorer's Information Center. The Linden Road Community Center is here as well as a pod station.
Friendship Forest in Menophra

Continue south to Calleta, a town with many secrets. If you have the time, see if you can find the underground passages that start in the basement of the Wheedle Art Gallery. There are also train and pod stations, a Hobo town, and other historic Second Life landmarks in the area.

Wheedle Art Gallery

In Calleta the Atoll Road and the Route 1 road share some of the same pavement. Take the righthand road northwest towards Oculea.

In Zephyr there is a wooden bridge over a river, and a waterfall to the right.

In Piano, there is a four-way intersection. Route 1 ends and becomes Park Way, Sandgrass Road goes north, and Dierli landing road goes southwest. It is the end of Route 1.

Amusement Parks in Second Life (February 2021)

By 'amusement park' I am referring to a location where you and some friends can walk around, maybe play a game of bumper cars, share a scarey ride, or just hang out.

I was surprised how many amusement parks there were in Second Life, but I was a bit disappointed that many of them were just a virtual representation of something you might see in real life.

Here is a sample of amusement parks I found on this week's travels. I left out places that focused on ghosts or gore, where everyone was naked when I arrived, or that had too many clowns.

Direct Landmarks and more information available at the Unofficial Tourist Information Office in Maryport, Second Life.    http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Maryport/243/17/22

Poster - MadPea Amusement Park

The Unknown Theme Park, Moneta
This park has been around since 2006. It has quite a few rides and attractions that have withstood the test of time.

MadPea Base - MadWorld Amusement Park
This park is  under renovation, but there is still a lot to see and do here. This park is unusual in that there is a bright new shiny pastel part, and an older and darker part. MadPea specializes in interactive games, boxed puzzles, escape rooms, and large scale interactive experiences like The Ghost Town.

Hello Kitty 45th Anniversary by Astralia

You don't have to be a Hello Kitty fan to enjoy this park. Activities include water slides and a romantic banana boat ride.

Chillville in Port LeClerc
You land in a cave, with a well in front of you. To get to the amusement rides proper, you have to jump in the well, but once you get there you will find not only the typical amusement rides, but spots set up throughout the park where you can sit with friends and play board games.
If you choose to explore the cave, one direction will take you through a maze of twisting tunnels, the other to what appears to be the interior of an elegant residence.

The Masters Estate - Majesterium

Get on the tram to go to the Park. This is a large amusement park which has many different areas. I enjoyed looking at the large zombie and the "Welcome to Wonderland" ride.

Fire & Ice Amusement Park
There are traditional rides, but there is also a haunted house where you can hunt for clues to solve a mystery story.

Tried but True:

Rizal Games and Funfair in Rizal
Paddle boats, arcade games, and lots of freebies. You can pick up a rideable bike and helmet, or try flying a kite.

Last but not least

Simple's Zoo of All Things
This place deserves an entry on its own, but until I get around to it I'm including it here because it does have a hang glider. It is also an art museum, a Zoo, and a repository of Second Life history. It is also a popular place to pick up freebies.

A small corner of Simple's Zoo with a Greenie Sculpture and a fire ring

Note: April 9, 2021. Apparently Simple's Zoo was closed on 3-31-2021. There are now ban lines around the parcels and it seems to be owned by one of the Lindens. I guess someone will have to decide whether it is worth SL keeping the electricity on if tier is not being paid.

This entry was made in February 2021. If you have comments or questions please IM me inworld.

Note: Most of the amusement parks in Second Life are free, so if you enjoy them, please make a small donation.

Themed Communities - Mieville

Mieville is a Victorian/Steampunk Community modeled after the style of late 19th Century San Francisco and New Orleans. Most of the regions are named after popular Victorian novelists like Kipling, Twain, Shelley, Verne, Dickens, Chesterton, or Doyle. You also have Mieville Pond, Mieville Lakes, and Mieville Mountain Rose.

There are many interesting shops, many with merchandise to match the Victorian/Steampunk theme.  There are beautiful gardens. The landscape changes with the seasons.

Mieville sponsors Historical Hunts like The Steam Hunt, The Silk Road Hunt, or the Renaissance Hunt.

There are also many local events through the year, like Mardi Gras, and non-residents are invited to visit the public areas at any time.

Some areas:

MIEVILLE POND

This large area showcases the work of Arcadia Asylum. There is a Library and Freebie Center, and many examples of her work. Be sure not to miss the examples that are underwater.

Everything here is free, although a tip to help support the place would not be amiss. Want a sea monster? You have several choices.

MIEVILLE DICKENS

The Asian Gardens in Mieville Dickens, by Mike Olbracht, are particularly beautiful.

MIEVILLE DOYLE

The heart of Mieville, the Town Hall is in the Center of the Village. Mieville Doyle is also home to the Sir James Barrie Home.

MIEVILLE TWAIN

Mieville Twain is where you will find Myrddin's Emporium, the Mieville SL Exploration Society, and the Mieville Brewery where the Professor teaches weekly classes. An airship designer and builder also has an office there, with an airship parked on top of the building.

MIEVILLE MOUNTAIN ROSE

The map and the teleport system make it easy to find your way around. Click on the rose logo.

MIEVILLE DOCKS

This is one of the newest regions to join Mieville. There are shops, a Carnival Center with games for large and small, a charming zoo, and bathing machines for the adventurous.

Know the Mainland - Exploring Jeogeot (2-8-21)

It is impossible to characterize a Second Life Continent in a few paragraphs, but here is an attempt to describe Jeogeot.

In a virtual reality where you can teleport from A to C without passing through B,  you might think "location" is perhaps not that important. You can spend quite some time in SL without paying any attention to how one place is related to another.  I was surprised, when I started to investigate Jeogeot,  to find that some of my favorite places were actually in Jeogeot. I had just teleported to them without thinking about the 'there'.

I think it is important to learn about the Continents.

The 'Continent Locator' you can pick up at the Memory Bazaar in Ross is a good tool.

Map of Jeogeot, from Second Life Wiki

Brief history: The first regions of Jeogeot were built in December 2005, starting in the northern part. It was finished in 2008.

Jeogeot has been called The Korean Continent. I read in the SL Forum Archives, 9-29-2007 a post by Ava Glasgow where she says that the name "Jeogeot" (assigned by mapper Dyne Talamasca, is Korean for "That thing over there" and is pronounced juh-gut. I have tried putting several Jeogeot Region names into Google Translate and they seem to have come from different sources. "Moolamangcho", for example, is "undo" in Hindi. (You figure it out.)

I also read a post in the SL Forum explaining the name

Originally Jeogeot was an isolated continent, but in 2019, when the Bellisserian Continent was created, it became possible to go from Jeogeot to Bellisseria and on to other continents.

Part of Wellington Road

The land: There are large stretches of terrain exhibiting waves or bumps. I do not know if this is how the land was originally made, or if it is a result of shifts over time. There are also several notable sinkholes. With the exception of the Pyri Peaks and the volcano, there are no notable mountains.

Population/buildings are concentrated along the roads and in areas with access to water. There appears to be a lot of abandoned land.

Transportation: You cannot circumnavigate Jeogeot in a ship. It is not only due to clogs of private owners building on water land, but the fact that some of the land is cut off right at the edge of the void ocean. (See Sinuiju Region for an example.)

There is an extensive road system, and you can drive from one end of the Continent to the other without having to use a teleport.

Both Yavapods and SLGI vehicles have regular routes.

The only train that I could find was the Zany Zen railroad, which connects several Regions.

There are many port facilities, particularly in the north.

There are several airports, and some new ones are being built now that it is possible to fly from Jeogeot, to the other continents.

Some Places to Visit:

ZEBRASIL INFOHUB:

You may have already visited here. The Ichelus Volcano is nearby, and Hotel Adriano, Michael Linden's home in SL, is off the coast.

PYRI FUNFAIR

There is a special box office in Pyri, which will give you a teleport map to the boat service that takes you to the island. From there it is an uphill walk to the Funfair itself. Never mind the rats, they are mainly harmless. If you want to, you can climb to the top of the mountain in South Forepaw. At 179 feet it is reported to be the highest mountain in Jeogeot. (Note: Flying is turned off in Jeogeot). The Funfair has several amusements. For a great finish, get a ticket for the Tunnel of Love from the dummy in the Ticket Booth. If by some chance your carriage goes off the track and you end up in the mines below, the good news is that there are a lot of places to explore, and lots of treasure to pick up. The bad news is that if you mis-step, you die and you get sent home.

SPACE STATION AT MOS AINSLEY

The doors are locked, so I use the "double click to teleport here" or "sit here" cheats to get inside. There are free space suits in the lockers by the front door.

Inside Mos Ainsley

There is a duplicate space station at MoonBase. Unfortunately, you are no longer able to rezz a shuttle in the launching pit at Mos Ainsely and take off. Apparently the folks on the Mainland were tired of being buzzed by errant spacecraft. (I know nothing about this.)

CHILBO

This is one of the neighborhoods in Second Life where like-minded folks have formed a community. Many residents here are dedicated to art and learning.  The Expedition Central ground level building in the center of town has a teleport that will take you to their sky structure*, which is full of posters about Second Life locations. Some of the posters will just give you a teleport location, but most of them will give you a notecard with additional information. Unfortunately, the original founder, Cyrus Hush, is no longer with us. It is still an amazing collection and a testiment to its creator, Cyrus Hush. I got a lot of my starting material there.

Expedition Central in Chilbo

ZANY ZEN RAILROAD

This is one of the small railroads in Second Life. You can catch it at several stations along the route - the train turns around at the end so you won't get lost.

Waiting at the station

There is great attention to detail shown in the trains and in the depots.

Someone has suggested joining the Zany Zen Railroad line from Little Coneston to Red Hook in Bellisseria, probably by boat.

 THE LORDSHORE BRIDGE

This is supposed to be one of the longest bridges in Second Life.

Lordshore Bridge (much photographed)

THE DONGYEONGIU TO SEORAKSAN UNDERWATER TUNNEL

One end of the tunnel - you drive into the water.

The walls of the tunnel are transparent, so you can watch the underwater scenary as you go along.
--------

Some obscure history of Jeogeot - There is a Region called Nampo. It used to be the location of the First Church of Elvis; however, a sex club moved into the sky and caused massive lag for everyone. Residents on the ground formed The Nampo Liberation Front to combat the problem. Eventually the sex club moved to Zindra, but the SL Church of Elvis moved in the meantime.

Even better, visit Jeogeot. There is a lot more to see and experience there.

*It is not a skybox, it is a skycan.

5-3-2021 - There are excellent maps in the New Kadath Lighthouse Gallery showing some of the earliest depictions of Jeogeot and other continents.
