Visiting Digiworldz

After reading about Virtual Quests in Outworlding, I was led to an article about using virtual reality as an aid to learning another language.  I decided to visit.

Visiting other virtual worlds can be complicated. Fortunately it turned out that Digiworldz was already available through my Firestorm 'OS' viewer and log-in was easy.

I was impressed that the Welcome dialogue was in multiple languages: English, French, Czech, Spanish, German, Danish, Italian, and Portuguese.

The landing area was easy to navigate, with event calendars and direction boards.

I found the Spanish language learning region, Escape, with no problem.

There were options to hear the phrases spoken, and a way to keep track of your correct answers, which I assume were available only to registered students, but anyone could try their hand at testing their knowledge of Spanish. I was glad to see that this course appears to continue being offered as part of summer school. I imagine it is a popular class!

After visiting this class I explored some of the rest of the Digiworldz Welcome Area. I learned that Digiworldz currency is 'D$' and they use the Codex system. There were freebies and options to choose a different avatar. There was free 30-day housing but prim limits were 131 per parcel. A sandbox gave instructions on creating prims. There were teleport boards to multiple other destinations in Digiworldz, and (through an Open Sim teleport) to different worlds in Open Sim.

I also visited Metaverse University in Digiworldz, which currently offers classes in different subjects.

I still prefer Second Life to other virtual worlds, but Open Sim offers a lot of options for educators who want lower-cost alternatives to using virtual reality as part of their curriculum.
