"Free for Avatars Under 30 Days Old" Offers (Beginners)

Many merchants offer free items for residents who are less than thirty days old. One of the problems with these offers is that by the time you find out about them, you are usually too old.

If you are a new resident, I recommend the website FabFree in Second Life's list of free items for avatars under 30 days old. It has a lot of good information and was updated in January 2022. Below shows one of three free starter outfits from LBD. She includes a BOM Bento Mesh Ruth 2.0 avatar.

Visiting some of the locations you might run into a situation where the merchant asks you to send a notecard to a certain person. How do you do that?

Under your Inventory list you will find some symbols.

Press the 'plus sign' to get options. Select 'New Note".

Fill out the notecard. Be sure to name it in your inventory. Also, be sure to change the permissions so that you can share it.

In Firestorm you will find a tab marked "Content". Clicking it gives you the "Search" box. Choose "People" and then put in the name of the person you are looking for. When you have the person you want, click their "Profile" box. There is a box there to drag the notecard to. You will get a message "Are you sure?" and then a message that notecard has been sent.

Notecards are used to send messages to other avatars when IM's might not work. You can attach pictures (in the form of textures) to notecards, but you should check for permissions before sending them to someone else.

Q: What are permissions?

A: Click on an item in your inventory.

You will see a 'Properties' tab.

Click on that, and you will see

This one shows you have full permissions. Before you send the notecard, check all the boxes like the one shown.

Permissions are tricky, because sometimes items are listed as 'no transfer' when they can be transferred. You can also get in trouble when you put transferrable items into a box, and then forget to set the box permissions so that the item can be transferred.

If you look at Marketplace listings you will see "Permissions:
Copy. Modify. Transfer.

The seller will mark out the permission that are not included. For example, you might be able to make copies for your own use, but not transfer any of them.

"Full-perm" items are items that you can copy, modify, and transfer, although sometimes the listing will make clear that you can use the item as part of a build that you are selling, but you can't sell the item on its own.
