Getting a 'First Generation' Linden Home

Jeremy Linden has written an excellent article on getting a Linden Home. I don't see any reason to repeat everything that he has written, but below is some additional information on 'First Generation' homes that you might call "Things the Lindens Didn't Tell You"

"First Generation" Homes

The "First Generation" Homes are on the four original Premium Home Continents. These continents have no connection to the Mainland or to each other, so you can only get to them by teleporting. The Eastern Premium Home Continent was originally called Nascera, or Nacera, but now is usually referred to as the Eastern Premium Continent. The Eastern Premium Home Continent is also accessible from Orville and some other LDPW Regions on the west. The Eastern Premium Home Continent also has the most interesting areas to explore, like Cape Ekim. The three southern continents are called Premium South 1, 2, and 3.

The Premium Home Continents are almost duplicates of each other, for example, you will find a Meadowbrook Infohub on each continent.
Premium Continents Compared (Map, 12-28-2019).

According to the Wiki these first homes were released in 2010. At one point there were 38,800 Linden Premium homes.

All the original Premium homes are on 512 parcels. The four neighborhood types are the

Tahoe - rustic A-frames
Tahoe

Elderglen - 'Fantasy' dwellings
Elderglen
Shareta Osumai - traditional Japanese homes
Shareta Osumai
Meadowbrook - California modern homes.

Advantages of choosing a 'First Generation' home:

  • You only use 512 of your 1024 Premium 'free' land allowance, so you could buy an additional 512  plot on the Mainland or donate your unused tier to a group.
  • Public areas are nicely landscaped with parks and areas to explore.
  • Right now if you choose one of the homes in a Linden Home 'First Generation" neighborhood you have many options to choose from, as demand is down.
  • I haven't noticed any particular problems with lag when I visited.
  • If you don't like a lot of neighbors you'll be fine. There are also many large open spaces where you could ride a virtual horse.
  • Many long-term Second Life residents swear by their 'First Generation' homes and say they don't want to move.

Disadvantages of choosing a 'First Generation' home:

  • When you accept a parcel you are restricted to the type of house that is on it now*.
  • There are few drivable roads - just footpaths.
  • While some areas have navigatable water, there are also places where the land just stops at The Void Ocean. You cannot sail between the 'First Generation' Linden Home areas and the Mainland.
  • Outside landscaping area is extremely limited.
  • With less land you have a smaller prim allowance, so your interior decorating may be limited.
  • The 'First Generation' neighborhoods do not have covenants restricting ban lines.
  • Rumor is that the Lindens will be focusing on the new Bellisserean neighborhoods, and residents in the old Linden Homes areas may have to relocate.

In April 2019 the new 'Second Generation' homes in Bellisserea were first opened. There are currently about 10,000 of them, and they are still building. I will write more about Bellisserea later.

*In Bellisseria, when you accept a parcel, you may change the residence on it to one of four models that matches that particular neighborhood's style.
